In Their Own Words: Andrew and Marnie

Andrew, Marnie, and Austin Stein

Thanks to Andrew Stein, CCAS BA ’08, and Marnie (Geller) Stein, CCAS BA ’08, for sharing their story!

Andrew, Marnie, and Austin SteinMy wife and I were both graduates of the class of 2008. We met freshman year hanging out in Thurston Hall and immediately recognized that we had a shared interest in music, art, food, and the outdoors… all things we would explore together in DC. We spent a lot of time that first year hanging out on the Mt. Vernon campus and exploring that area of DC (we like to think we discovered Jettie’s on Foxhall Road before it expanded elsewhere).

We had grown up 20 minutes apart from each other on the south shore of Long Island and had some mutual friends but had not crossed paths until GW. Growing up in the same area, specifically within 10 minutes of the beach, helped us develop an instant connection.

From there, we spent the rest of our time at GW together including doing a semester abroad in Barcelona. Post-GW we moved to New York. We were both in graduate school (Marnie at NYU for education and me at Brooklyn Law School) but we stayed together as the bond we had formed at GW and the vibrant city life we experienced in DC both translated perfectly to New York.

We were married on June 22, 2013 and now have a two year-old son Austin. We recently returned to Long Island where Marnie is continuing her education work by running a tutoring business and I am the COO of a legal technology company.

As my company is technically based in DC, we come back frequently and always look forward to doing so. GW will always be a special place for us, not just because of the education and maturation we experienced there, but because it’s where we developed the foundation for the most important thing in our lives, our family.
