Worldwide Celebrations of George Washington’s Birthday

There’s nothing GW alumni love more than celebrating their namesake’s birthday. Every year, thousands of Colonials around the world get together to party like it’s 1732 (the year George Washington was born) and raise a glass to their alma mater.

This year, George’s 285th birthday was feted by more than 1,500 graduates in 38 cities (30 in the U.S. and 8 abroad). The “birthday bashes” ranged from happy hours to a comedy show to Raise High Tailgates cheering on the GW Men’s basketball team.

“In late February every year since 2010, Shanghai alumni have gathered for the George Washington’s Birthday Bash,” said Shanghai alumni network volunteer Bessie Chen, ESIA MA ’07. “This year Professor Steve Suranovic and students from his Global Bachelor’s Program class joined us to celebrate with a tailor-made GW cake. It’s a great platform for the GW community to gather, reconnect, and build new relationships.”

“I have lived in Hong Kong for 4 years – putting my Business and Mandarin studies to good use – but that can be lonely without the support of where you built your academic strength,” added Chelsea Hollstein, ESIA BA ’11. “The GW Alumni Association reminds me that I will always be part of something much greater!”

The Colonial community back in Foggy Bottom honored George’s birthday with a number of events throughout the month of February. Read more about these celebrations at GW Today. View photos of George’s Birthday Bashes around the world on the GW Alumni Flickr page.
