On Sunday, Dec. 8, despite the first snowfall of the season, Colonials fans packed Washington, DC’s Verizon Center to cheer on the GW Men’s Basketball team during the 19th annual BB&T Classic.

A pregame reception brought fans together for food, drink and rallying speeches by GW’s director of athletics, Patrick Nero, and Men’s Basketball head coach Mike Lonergan (you may remember Lonergan’s crowd-pleasing gesture at GW’s recent Dollar Dog Night).

After the crowd was revved up by Nero and Lonergan, the spirit program and GW band lead the group in cheering on the Buff and Blue as the team took on the University Maryland Terrapins.

With 0.6 seconds left in the game, the Colonials secured a 77-75 win. The victory moves GW’s record to 8-1, reports GWsports.com.

The win also evens the Colonials’ record against the Terrapins at the BB&T Classic, bringing the total to 5-5. It also marks Coach Lonergan’s first win against Maryland, with whom he served as an assistant coach on Gary Williams’ staff during the 2004-05 season.

–Congrats to the Colonials, and thanks to all the alumni, students and fans who cheered the team on to victory — raise high! For more photos from this event, visit us on Flickr:
