John Elmer (Jack) Prichard, SMHS MD ’48

John Elmer (Jack) Prichard, SMHS MD ’48, died on Sept. 19, 2012, after an illness of pancreatic cancer. Dr. Prichard was born in Washington, DC, and graduated from Catholic University and George Washington University Medical School. He married Esther Bell Beatty, his wife of 67 years in 1946. In the early ‘50s, Dr. Prichard completed internship and residency along with service in the U.S. Navy. In 1956, Dr. Prichard and his family moved across the country for Dr. Prichard’s surgical residency at the Veterans Administration hospital (affiliated with Johns Hopkins University), Perry Point, MD, and the University of Oklahoma Medical School, Oklahoma City.

Dr. Prichard and his family settled in Corona, CA, where Prichard opened a practice in 1959. He was the second board-certified surgeon in Corona and later was elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Prichard retrired from his pratice in 1990. He also worked at Corona Hospital and Riverside’s county and community hospitals, also at various institutions and rest homes. He served as Chief of the Medical Staff at Corona Hospital in 1970; chair of the Surgery Department at Riverside General Hospital in the early ‘80s; Director, Tri County Surgical Society of Southern California; and associate clinical professor of surgery at Loma Linda University for many years.

Dr. Prichard is survived by his wife, Esther, and children Sophia Jane Szabo of Anchorage, Ak., John Stanley Prichard of Ventura, Calif., and Suzanne Ruth Prichard of Corona, along with daughter-in-law Michelle Broneau Prichard and son-in-law Dezso Szabo. He is also survived by grandchildren John (Jake) Prichard, Anne Prichard, Alicia Auleta, Michael Auleta, Steven Auleta, Joseph Prichard Szabo and Rose Szabo.
