Nikolaos Stavrou, ESIA MA ’65, CCAS PhD ’70

Nikolaos Stavrou, ESIA MA ’65, CCAS PhD ’70, a professor at Howard University and editor of the journal Mediterranean Quarterly, died Dec. 29, 2011 at 76.

Stavrou was born in the Albanian village of Griazdani and escaped with his family to Greece during WWII. After coming to the United States in 1956, he attended Hunter College in New York and completed his Masters and PhD at GW.

Stavrou taught courses in international affairs and political theory at Howard University for over 35 years. He also helped found Mediterranean Quarterly, a journal addressing economic and political issues of the Mediterranean region, and wrote widely on Yugoslav, Greek and Albanian affairs.
