Bernard J. Pankowski, GWBS MS ’65

Bernard J. Pankowski, GWBS MS ’65, an Army colonel who retired in 1975 from the office of the assistant secretary of defense for telecommunications, died Nov. 11. He was a Springfield resident.

Col. Pankowski served nearly 30 years in the Army. His assignments included command of a signal battalion in South Korea from 1965 to 1966 and command of a signal group in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970.

After his military retirement, he worked for 13 years at Computer Sciences in software development and communications systems. For nine years, he was an associate professor of computer information systems at Northern Virginia Community College.

His memberships included the Washington area branch of the Hawaii State Society. He also led a band called the Dixie Five-O Dance Combo, in which he played the accordion. The group played many years at the membership luau at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington.
