Colonial Love Q & A: David & Alexis

Thanks to David Staples, GWSB BBA ’09, and Alexis Cates, CCAS BS ’10, for sharing their story!

Where did you meet on campus? We met as EMeRG colleagues when I was a junior and he was a senior. We occasionally worked together on the ambulance, and began to hang out as friends throughout the year. When he graduated, we started dating.

What were your first impressions of each other? I initially thought he was very quiet and kept to himself, and very serious about work. He thought I was very energetic and quite proud of my southern heritage. We both were quite passionate about our work on EMeRG. Somehow all of these traits brought us together!

What only-at-GW moment did you share as a couple? We have many only-at-GW moments. We both worked President Obama’s inaugural parade in 2008 as EMS volunteers. He attended my graduation on the National Mall. We have seen fireworks at the 4th of July from campus rooftops. We experienced #snowpocalypse together in 2010, specifically wandering around the national monuments when the snow stopped.

Tell us about your last visit to GW together or how GW has remained important to your life. We have visited GW several times together since graduating. Most recently, we attended the EMeRG 20th anniversary gathering at Alumni Weekend 2016. We got to visit with all of our old EMeRG friends and colleagues, meet the current EMeRG students, and see their new response units. We also took a nice tour of campus to see all of the changes made with new buildings and dorms.
