Gorelick, center, with Secretary of State John Kerry in Afghanistan.

Jean-Marc Gorelick, ESIA MA ’09, a USAID Foreign Service Officer, is currently serving as a senior elections advisor in Afghanistan, where presidential and provincial elections are slated to occur on Apr. 5, 2014.

“Inclusive, credible and transparent elections are critical to securing Afghanistan’s democratic future,” Gorelick said in an email.

Gorelick recently met Secretary of State John Kerry when the Secretary was in Kabul, Afghanistan to discuss the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA).  The BSA will determine the size and scope of a post-2014 U.S. presence in Afghanistan, says Gorelick.

Gorelick’s post in Afghanistan is a one year tour. Prior to this assignment, his last tour was in Senegal.  His next tour will be in Cambodia.
