Alumnus Named Evening News Co-Anchor in TX

John Estrada, ESIA BA ’09, has been named the evening news co-anchor of KAVU Newscenter25 in Victoria, TX, The Victoria Television Group announced on Sept. 23.  Estrada joins co-anchor Rissa Shaw for Newscenter25’s 6 pm and 10 pm CT newscasts.

Estrada comes to the Newscenter25 team from New York City, where he was a segment producer for MSNBC’s “The Cycle” and NBC’s “Weekend Today.”

Estrada received his on-camera training at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where he received a Master of Science in Broadcast Journalism in May 2013.  While at Columbia, he covered the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the 2012 election and the rise of stay-at-home dads in New York.

Prior to his move to NYC, Estrada worked at ABC News’ Washington bureau for “Good Morning America,” “World News” and “This Week.”  t ABC News, he assisted in the network’s coverage of the 2009 Holocaust Museum shooting and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

A native of Garland, Texas, Estrada received a bachelor of arts in international affairs and politics from GW in 2009.  At GW, he was a member of the GW Cheer Team, Phi Kappa Psi and Class Council President.

Estrada is an active member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association and the Writers Guild of America East.
