Alumni Positions To Open on Board of Trustees

As fall approaches, the GW Alumni Association (GWAA) is preparing to nominate distinguished alumni to serve as members of the GW Board of Trustees.

The Board of Trustees has both Alumni Trustees and Recent Alumni Trustees—alumni serving in these roles have all of the same rights and responsibilities as other members of the board but also represent the interests of GW’s alumni population.

The Board of Trustees plays an integral role in oversight of fiscal, academic, and campus operations.  Trustees provide leadership in developing the university’s endowed resources and participate actively in GW’s strategic initiatives.

Service on the Board of Trustees is the most demanding and prestigious volunteer opportunity available to alumni and is reserved for those who can demonstrate the highest level of commitment to the university.

“My nine years on the Board of Trustees has been one of the highlights of my life,” says Gerald Lazarus, SMHS MD ‘63. “GW is on a spectacular trajectory to become one of the great national universities. To be an effective trustee, one must look globally at the university mission.”

“This is a particularly exciting time in GW’s history,” echoes Christopher Bright, CCAS MPhil ’03, PhD ’06. “Our university continues to build upon its internationally recognized strengths. It has been immensely fulfilling to serve as a Recent Alumni Trustee during such an extraordinary period.”

In collaboration with the Board of Trustees, the GWAA Nominations and Governance Committee makes recommendations for alumni to fill vacancies among the five Alumni Trustees and two Recent Alumni Trustees who serve on the Board.

This year, the GWAA will be accepting applications for one Alumni Trustee position and one Recent Alumni Trustee, both for a term beginning July 1, 2014.

Who can apply?

All GW alumni are eligible for the positions, provided that each applicant:

  • has demonstrated commitment to the university and its alumni by active involvement in alumni organizations, programs and activities;
  • has demonstrated commitment to the university through appropriate; philanthropic support; and
  • has distinguished themselves through volunteer and/or professional activities

Additionally, applicants for Recent Alumni Trustee must be a “recent graduate.” A recent graduate is defined as an alumnus/a who graduated less than five and one half (5 1/2) years prior to the beginning of the term (i.e., those who graduated on or after January 1, 2009 are eligible).
