Richard Darius Thieme, ESIA BA ’83

Richard Darius Thieme, ESIA BA ’83, a legal translator, died in Tokyo on Nov. 7, 2011.

Richard moved to Japan soon after college. In 1985, he earned a certificate in Japanese Studies from Sophia University in Tokyo. During the late 80’s and 90’s, Richard was employed by the law firms Baker and McKenzie and White and Case as a legal translator. In 1997, he established the translation company Transword, Inc., which employed Richard and several other translators up until he was diagnosed with leukemia in March of 2011.

Richard Thieme is survived by his father, Darius L. Thieme of Nashville; his mother, Mary S. Thieme of Panama City, FL, and his brother, Donald M. Thieme of Valdosta, GA. He also leaves an aunt, Diantha W. Stevenson of Green Mountain, NC. Richard is remembered by his Nashville friends as thoughtful and generous with a love of music and a wide-ranging curiosity.
